Helene - Home

Home
What does it mean to be home?
Sit down for a second
and I’ll tell you about my home

Home is the tall Corinthians columns
Visible outside my bedroom window

Home is the low hanging Oak branch
That’s dripping with the Spanish moss
The culprit responsible for clogging the drains in my car

Home is the smell of freshly fried shrimp
and the dollop of Crystal that coats them

Home is the sound of Mr. Okra
Singing the song of his in stock fruit

Home is the multi colored Mardi Gras beads
Still hanging from the trees on St. Charles
A reminder of the party still hanging in November

Home is the inevitable run-in bound to happen
With some distant cousin or friend
No matter where in the city you are

Home is the dip of your car and the sound of the screech
As you plummet into a deep crater

Home is New Orleans
The feelings, the sounds, the smells, the looks
